Looking for an "intermediate" pet

Intermediate isn't a great word for what I'm looking for, but I don't know what word to use.

My family had cats during my teenage years, and I love cats. I wasn't their sole caretaker, but since I was older I did have some responsibilities for taking care of them. I fed them, made sure they had water, cleaned the litterbox, played with them, pet and cuddled them, etc. My hope is to get a couple of cats later down the road, but I also know that there's a lot more that goes into caring for a pet than just what I did growing up. Plus I never spent any money on the cats. I don't know if I want to immediately jump into getting cats after 10 years of not taking care of one and having no idea how expensive and difficult being the sole caretaker of a pet can be. So I'm looking into getting a lower maintenance pet to care for as a first-time sole pet owner. I want to make sure that any pet I bring into my home is well cared for and not neglected due to my inexperience and possible lack of preparation for the expenses.

To clarify: I'm not asking for something I can just get for a couple of years before saying "Yeah, cat time. I'm done with this pet." Any animal I get will be cared for to the best of my ability. I'm just worried that a cat might be too much too soon. My first thought is a reptile, maybe a bearded dragon, but I don't know how their maintenance is compared to a cat. My impression is that reptiles are easier than mammals, but that could be wrong. Any pet recommendations for what I'm hoping for? And if you could also give a rough price estimate and roughly how much space the pet would need that'd be very much appreciated.
