would a tortoise give me good experience in reptile handling or should I go for something more challenging?

I'm thinking if getting into reptile handling. After many years of depression my love of animals has returned & I'd like to get into owning reptiles, maybe even breeding or rescuing in the future. Would a tortoise give me a good experience as a starter reptile or are they not active enough? I want to get used to holding or handling a reptile. Letting it free roam a bit outside of its enclosure, taming one, etc. I wanted a bearded dragon at first but I'm not a fan of feeder insects at all. Tegus are cool as well but I dont know much about them & by loooking at them they dont seem like something a beginner should start wit although I could be wrong. Does anyone else have any other suggestions too?
