PSA: It is perfectly safe to feed your beardie kale. Saying that it binds excess calcium is a myth.

I've seen quite a few posts villainizing kale in a bearded dragon's diet recently, and feel the need to debunk this. Kale is perfectly safe to feed bearded dragons, and in my experience, they actually really enjoy kale.

I'm not sure where the myth started, but STOP SAYING IT! Let people feed their beardies kale!

Oxalate is chemical compound that, in a specific form, binds to calcium. The myth of a vegetable being "calcium binding" comes from the high oxalate content of a vegetable. Therefore, when analyzing the calcium binding capacity of specific produce, you are actually analyzing the oxalate content.

This research article provides a table of common foods and their oxalate content. As you can see, kale's oxalate content is actually quite low in comparison to many other greens. So, let your beardies feast on kale!
